Subcultural Theory and Crime in Nigeria: A Criminological Perspective

This study examines the relationship between subcultural theory and the persistence of crime in Nigeria, with particular focus on youth involvement in cultism, internet fraud (“Yahoo Yahoo”), political thuggery, and regional gang formations. Drawing on classical and contemporary contributions to subcultural theory, the paper argues that criminal behavior in Nigeria is not merely an individual pathology but a collective adaptation to structural constraints such as poverty, unemployment, social exclusion, and weak institutional frameworks.
