Adjusting State and Market in Nigeria: The Paradoxes of Orthodoxy
One of the first acts of the Babangida military administration on coming to power in a coup in August 1985, thanks in part to internal and external pressure (West Africa 1986: 1404; Diamond 1988: 23; Biersteker 1988: 1-54 and Chazan 1989: 333-334), was to declare its intention to simultaneously pursue programmes of political democratisation and economic adjustment in Nigeria.
