Islam and Colonialism: Intellectual responses of Muslims of northern Nigeria to British colonial rule, by Muhammad S. Umar
This ambitious work demonstrates the centrality of Islamic discourse to the thinking and responses of three major socio-political groups in the Sokoto caliphate of northern Nigeria following British conquest (1903) of the region: the Islamic leadership of the caliphate and constitutive emirates; religious scholars (the ‘ulama); and (eventually) Western-educated elites.
