Illustrative case studies: Chile and Nigeria

This chapter illustrates how the protest-repression nexus has played out in two countries: Chile and Nigeria. These micro-level investigations outline how the dynamics that were investigated using statistical approaches in the previous chapters developed under specific historical, cultural, economic and political conditions. The Chilean case study concentrates on the Pinochet regime from 1973-88 and the beginning of the subsequent democratic regime.
