English Matrimonial Cruelty Law in Nigeria: Dead or Alive?

The Nigerian Matrimonial Causes Decree of 1970' suggests farreaching innovations in Nigeria's matrimonial cruelty law.Of particular interest is its divergence from English matrimonial provisions, which, until 1970, had been incorporated automatically into the Nigerian law.Although the 1970 Decree marks the beginning of a separate body of matrimonial law in Nigeria, the influence of English jurisprudence is likely to continue, particularly with respect to matrimonial cruelty.To what extent that influence will now be felt in Nigeria has not yet been made clear by the courts.It would seem desirab…
