Indirect Rule, Civil Society, and Ethnicity: The Africa Dilemma

This article seeks to present an interpretation of post-independence African politics. My central argument is that Saharan African countries face a threefold challenge in the post-independence period: decolonizing the state, deracializing civil society, and restructuring unequal external relations of dependency.
