The power sector in Nigeria is dominated by the intensive use of fossil fuel (88%) for power generation and low electrification rates at about 45% (55% urban and less that 35% rural). The Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) aims to increase access to electricity to 75% and 90% by 2020 and 2030 respectively and at least 10% of renewable energy mix by 2025 which, according to the Rural Electrification Strategy, entails connecting approximately 470,000 additional rural households per year by 2020 and 500,000 rural household from 2020 to 2040.
