Unravelling the nexus between neonatal sepsis, the neonatal microbiome and antimicrobial resistance in Nigeria/Africa in the OMICs era: a PRISMA-guided systematic review and meta-analysis.

Neonatal sepsis remains a high-stakes problem because antimicrobial resistance is now widespread in bloodstream infections and is especially severe in Africa. In 2025, WHO-based reporting indicated that one in six laboratory-confirmed bacterial infections worldwide were resistant to antibiotics, with resistance to first-choice treatments for some bloodstream infections in Africa exceeding 70%.
