Beyond Western Casework: A Scoping Review Mapping Indigenous and Faith-Based Psychosocial Support Models for Medical Social Work Practice in Nigeria (2010–2026)

Medical social work in Nigeria was inherited from British colonial almoner model emphasizing Western individualistic casework. Hospital practice reveals communal realities involving extended family conferences (Umunna/Ebi), town unions, age-grade associations, and faith-based prayer. These are documented anecdotally but not systematically mapped, creating theory-practice dissonance and policy invisibility - pilot scan of National Health Policy 2016 shows zero mention of social work.
